Food production affects and is influenced by several factors. In this brief, vignettes illustrate the potential pathways from food production (see figure below) to improved nutritional status. Agricultural activities typically affect more than one pathway and interact with the enabling environment that includes policies, the natural resource base, and cultural practices, among other factors. However, all of the pathways are interrelated. This brief focuses on the pathway from food production to better diets and nutrition, illustrated in blue in the figure below. However, there is still a lack of well-documented examples of programming at scale that are required to improve our understanding of how agriculture can best contribute to improved nutrition. There is growing international agreement on key pathways 1 and principles 2 for improving nutrition through agriculture, as summarized in Understanding and Applying Primary Pathways and Principles (Brief 1). Farmers rely on the potassium-rich salt and component in the globe's fertilizer industry to boost annual harvests. Russia and Belarus, one of Moscow's allies, provide about 40% of the world's exports of potash. Make it $500 million.' It's so desperately needed. "I turned to Tom, and I said, 'Tom, double that. Department of Agriculture announced that would invest $250 million to produce fertilizer production," Biden said Wednesday, recalling an earlier conversation he had with Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. The effort will attempt to ease one of the main culprits behind the spike in food prices: a global shortage of fertilizer. The White House said it also plans to double its investment in domestic fertilizer production, to $500 million from $250 million, to lower costs for growers. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen in April said global food prices are "skyrocketing."
